As much as I love online business, sometimes it’s VERY hard to stay motivated when things don’t go your way.

While the month of September was decent for my business revenue, I began to see a troubling trend with OneHourProfessor.com that I’m working to try to fix.

Long story short, traffic is dropping, and income is dropping even though this is my primary focus.  To be completely honest with you, I’m not used to these types of trends when I start projects and I think I’m having such a difficult time because this is such a competitive area.

That said, giving up isn't something I do often and I'm not about to start today.

In this post I'll discuss a VERY big personal life update, the issues I'm seeing with the site, my plan of attack, how my wife and I have started ANOTHER YouTube channel, and I'll go over my overall portfolio as I always do.

If you're in a competitive niche, it's likely you'll get a ton of value out of this one.

This month my total income after expenses was $22,244 which comes out to $741 in profit per day.

I should also mention, if you’re looking to start your own blog, make sure you check out my free IGNITION course today.

Personal Life Update

September was another tame month from a personal standpoint.  My wife and I stayed at home and hung out with some friends, but other than that there’s nothing crazy going on.

Well, I guess there is one thing crazy.

My wife and I are SUPER EXCITED to announce that we’re finally having our first child.

As of now she’s 13 weeks into her pregnancy and it looks like within the next six months a little baby girl is going be running around the house.

To be honest, this is made me reflect a little bit on what it is that I do for a living.

While most parents are stuck working a full-time job away from their children most of the time, I’ll be able to watch every single minute of every single day with my child growing.

Yes, I still have to work and won’t always be available, but the ability to go and hang out with my daughter at any given time is a pretty incredible thing that I promise not to take for granted.

Further, this has also made me question what I’ve been working on and making sure that it’s something I can create a life-balance with.

Truth be told, the OHP website is an exhausting project because there’s so many moving parts and it's obscenely competitive and though I’ve outsourced a lot of the different tasks, it still requires a lot of my attention every day.

That’s fine, but I’m determined not to let my work intrude on time with my family.  I’m trying to train myself to create standard working hours that I can abide by each and every day.

This is the curse of the self-employed.  It’s very easy to overwork yourself, especially if your work is also you consider a hobby, like my business is to me.

That’s all for the personal update.

If this is your first time on my website let me explain a few things about my detailed income reports each month that outlines the money I made (or lost) each month.

I’m doing this for a number of reasons:

1) I strive to be transparent about what it takes to make money online.

2) These reports help me keep track of my own progress.

3) These reports hold me accountable.

Keep in mind, I don’t create these to gloat about my earnings. I create them to help you understand the true “earning curve” of online business.

On a side note, I don’t disclose my actual website URL’s on my reports because I’ve had bad experiences with copycats in the past.

So, in my income reports, you’ll see website generalizations like Website 1, Website 3, Website 5 Website 4, etc.

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s dive into the report.

Project Updates

Udemy Update

I don’t focus on Udemy any longer, but I have made money from them every month since I stopped.

OHP Website

  • To be honest, there’s nothing positive to report with the OHP website this month. While I did make revenue and things are moving along, I’m very disappointed with how far revenue fell this month and I’m struggling to figure out where the problem is.  I think I have some ideas on what it could be, and I’m trying new things, but it’s really difficult to succeed in the “Online Business” niche and I’m beginning to see it firsthand.  If any of you are trying to succeed in this area, I’d caution you and remind you it’s very difficult.  There are so many other niches out there that are much easier to deal with and sometimes I question my sanity for pushing so hard here.
  • Pageviews fell to 57k this month, which is a 15% decrease MoM.  While I’m not thrilled about it, my content strategy isn’t necessarily to get the most traffic possible, it’s to be profitable.  So this traffic drop isn’t as bad as it looks.
  • Referring domains increased to 2,213 and continues to climb as I guess post and more people learn about my blog.
  • This month I earned: $5,640. This was a 39% decrease in earnings which is a very big hit for a single month.  I’m not happy about it, and frankly, I’ve been struggling to deal with it, but I’m definitely not about to give up.
  • EPM decreased to $98 which is much less than the $136 I reported last month.
  • PLAN: I’ve noticed some really interesting trends with the OHP website.

    1) Traffic has continually been falling for the last four months.  I’m not panicked about this because even though traffic is falling, it’s falling from blog posts that I can’t monetize that well anyway.  So, although I don’t love it, I can deal with it.  The frustrating thing though is that my domain rating continues to increase and I’m getting more and more backlinks with each passing month.  This is contrary to what should be happening and the only thing I can chalk it up to is that I’m guest posting too often on specific outlets.  One of the general rules of SEO is that there are diminishing returns from backlinks that you get from the same domains.  Meaning, if you get one backlink from a domain, it will hold a lot more power than if you had five links from the same domain.  Personally, I think I may be guest posting too often on some of these outlets that I’ve been featured on.  I have no proof of this, and it’s a complete hypothesis, but it’s the only thing that makes sense to me.

    2) Revising content is essential in competitive niches.  While I’ve made a living creating content that I can publish once and update every couple of years, the OHP website is very different.  As of now, I’ve hired a writer to help assist me in making revisions to the content itself.  The interesting trend though is that I’ve noticed as these revisions have been happening, the entire site has had increases in traffic.  And not just the pages that have been revised, which I expect, but all of the pages on the site itself.  It’s almost as if Google understands I’m revising content across the site, which is leading Google to continually increase the rankings on my website as a whole.

    3) The key pages that I’ve been trying to rank on the top of Google for some time have fallen quite a bit in ranking.  Even though I’ve been able to build many links to these pages utilizing guest posts, it seems that these backlinks just aren’t as powerful as they once were.  I’m struggling to understand why, but a part of me thinks it’s because of the diminishing returns I had mentioned earlier. I plan on taking a step back from building as many links to these pages and focusing more on optimizing the content and making it better.

So, my plan?

At this point, I have my assistant writer helping me revise the content on the site.  In fact, he’s revising content every single day and it’s definitely been working.  I’m trying to revise the content myself as well, but that’s difficult to do considering I have 30 to 50 emails to answer every single day and many of them take quite a bit of time.  So, I’m going to continue working with him to revise content, as well as revise content myself, and even record some videos inside crucial blog posts to try to help me rank by increasing the time on the page.  There’s a lot of unknowns here, and I’m getting frustrated with my lack of progress, but I’m not about to give up just yet.

  • I have done nothing on this site for at least 12 months except add Ezoic and it continues to print money for me. I have no intention of working on it and will just let this sit as I work on my other projects.
  • Pageviews hit 155 k this month, which is a 17% decrease MoM.
  • Referring domains increased again to 1949.
  • This month I earned: $2,939. This was a decrease of 7% MoM.
  • EPM increased to $87 from the prior month.
  • PLAN: This site is currently 100% passive and I do not work on it.  I intend on selling this site once I’m consistently making enough from OHP to justify it.

  • Another month has gone by for this website and yet again it’s beat all of its previous earning records. While the site is simply sitting, it’s now making me a respectable income and I have to admit that it’s tempting to go back to the site and start creating more content.  I’m not going to do that at the moment, but if OHP doesn’t start showing more progress I may have to alter my approach to things and start putting more content here.
  • Pageviews hit 21k this month, which is a 20% increase MoM.
  • Referring domains increase to 235.
  • This month I earned: $408 and earnings increased 29% MoM.
  • EPM is at $19.19 which is decent.
  • How Much Have I Invested in This Website: $5,718
  • How Much Money Has This Website Made? $2,854
  • Total ROI: -$2,864
  • How Much Content is on the Website? Keep in mind this website is mostly focused on affiliate content with some informational content: 222 Blog posts
  • PLAN: Production has been paused.  This site is currently 100% passive and I do not work on it.  I may pick this site up again in the future, but for now I’ll let it sit.

Website 7

  • Another respectable month for website 7 and although I wanted to grow a little bit faster, I’m not going to get upset. It seems that I’ve hit some type of invisible plateau here and I don’t have time to do any link building, so my hope is that Google eventually picks up on all the new content that we’re writing and boosts the traffic even further.
  • Pageviews reached 143k this month, a 0.40% increase.
  • Referring domains increased to 431.
  • This month I earned: $5,023. This was an increase of 6% MoM.
  • EPM for the site this month is $35.07.
  • How Much Have I Invested in This Website: $36,860 ($900 Content budget each month)
  • How Much Money Has This Website Made? $38,549
  • Total ROI: $1,689 (If I were to sell the website today, I can assume I’d sell for an estimated $150k. Which means a net gain of about $152,000)
  • How Much Content is on the Website: Keep in mind that this is an informational type of website, not affiliate-related at all.
    • 1593 Informational pages on the website
    • 146 Informational Blog Posts
  • PLAN: Though the site traffic hasn’t been increasing dramatically, I still think the site is in pretty good shape. Sometimes traffic hits a plateau with websites, and I found that the best way to get through those is to continue to produce content.  The traffic has been very similar for the last three months, even though my team has posted around 100 articles in that timeframe, but we’ll see what happens in the next couple of months.  My guess is that Google is going to reward the site soon and I’ll see another pop with traffic.  I have no reason to believe this other than my experience, but we’ll see what happens.

Website 8

  • I’m excited to report that I’m almost to the point to where I’m going to monetize the site. For those that don’t know, I typically like to throw Ezoic ads on the site once it hits 10,000 page views in a given month.  This one is a thousand short of that right now, but I would be surprised if by the end of October it didn’t hit that number.  This is great because this will be in Q4, which is typically the best display ad performance you’ll see throughout the entire year.
  • Pageviews hit 9.2k this month, which is a 5% increase MoM.
  • Referring domains increased slightly.
  • This month I earned: $18, which is a decrease of 64% MoM.
  • EPM is now at $1.96
  • How Much Have I Invested in This Website: $7,364 ($400 Content budget each month)
  • How Much Money Has This Website Made? $824
  • Total ROI: -$6,540 (If I were to sell the website today, I can assume I’d sell for an estimated $1.5k. This means a net loss of about $5,000
  • How Much Content is on the Website? Keep in mind this website is mostly focused on affiliate content with some informational content.
    • 242 Informational Blog Posts
  • PLAN: As of now, my plan is to continue to publish three articles per week.  I know that this particular website will get a lot more traffic if I start to do a little bit of link building to it.  But I just don’t have a desire to do this right now as I’m busy with other projects.  However, if I have to slow down on the OHP site, this would be my next primary focus for sure.

The site is growing organically and doing well, but it’s had virtually no links built to it, and I also haven’t written any review content.  I know that if I adjusted my focus and put most of it here, there would be a big return on investment.  I’m hoping to be able to include display ads in November and so long as my page views hit the traffic threshold, this should offset the entire cost of content moving forward.  Typically, this is when websites really start to grow and I’m excited for the moment.

Website 9

  • Pageviews are 880 this month, which is a 14% decrease MoM.
  • Referring domains increased to 23.
  • This month I earned: $22. This was an increase of 46% MoM.
  • EPM is at $25.00
  • How Much Content is on the Website?
    • 25 Informational Blog Posts
  • PLAN: This site continues to sit; I have done nothing for it in years.  Production has been paused.  This site is currently 100% passive and I do not work on it.

Website 10

  • This is month 7 of the 100% Outsourced Authority Website Built by BrandBuilders. As of now, the site sits and is aging while I work on other projects.  That said, I’m happy to report that there’s finally some movement here.  In each of the previous months, I kept reporting that there were no page views.  Well, this goes to show you that sometimes we’re all a little dumb.  The reason why there weren’t any page views is that my Google analytics wasn’t set up correctly and I didn’t realize it.  That said, this was obviously the best month ever and though there were no earnings I’m starting to see a positive trend in traffic.
  • Pageviews were 383.
  • Referring domains I’m still building random links to the site and it seems to be helping as the DR in Ahrefs currently stands at 36.
  • This month I earned: $0
  • EPM is at $0
  • How Much Content is on the Website?
    • 33 Informational Blog Posts
  • PLAN: As of now I’m going to continue to build links to the site through guest posts.  This is a SUPER passive task as all I have to do is insert links in posts that are already going to get published.  I think once I hit 50-60 DR, I may start to consider writing more content for this site.  It’s hard because I need to offset the investment in Website 8 first, but that’s coming soon.

Website 8 YouTube Channel

  • This YouTube continues to make some awesome progress and it’s great to see what’s been happening. The first month ever, the earnings broke the $1000 mark and based on what I’m saying is going to continue to rise.  While nothing is ever guaranteed, this particular channel has had a very slow and steady increase in earnings and my hope is that this trend continues. If you’re interested in building an outsourced YouTube channel like this, I recommend that you check out this webinar.
  • Views hit 225k this month, which is an increase of 2% MoM.
  • Gained 806 subscribers this month.
  • Earnings increased to $1,024, which is an increase of 12% MoM.
  • How Much Did We Invest in This YouTube Channel: $2,520 (Estimate of $350/month in expenses)
  • How Much Money Has This YouTube Channel Made? $7,187
  • Total ROI: $4,667 (If I were to sell the channel today, I can assume I’d sell for an estimated $30k.  Which means a net gain of about $36k)
  • PLAN: The team that my wife and I (mostly my wife to be honest) have built continues to publish a video every day on this channel.  For the near term, that continues to be the plan.

OHP YouTube Channel

  • The OHP YouTube channel continues to sit, and I just don’t have time to publish on it. As I mentioned before, I want to, but it just isn’t realistic at this point.  I am contemplating creating a course soon and if I do I’ll obviously be releasing a batch of videos on YouTube to try to get people into the pre-sale list, but overall, it mostly just sits as I’m so swamped with other things I don’t think I can take on this commitment.
  • Views remained the same at 24k
  • Gained 442 subscribers this month.
  • Channel earned $534 this month. An earnings increase of 7%.
  • How Much Have I Invested in This YouTube Channel: $3,927 (Estimate of $120/month in expenses)
  • How Much Money Has This YouTube Channel Made? $12,098
  • Total ROI: $8,171 (If I were to sell the channel today, I can assume I’d sell for an estimated $15k.  Which means a net gain of about $23k)
  • PLAN: As of now I still have to let this channel sit. The OHP website has taken so much work and continues to be a time suck, but hopefully, by the end of the year, it will increase significantly.  If not, there’s a good chance that I’ll start throwing OHP YouTube videos back into the mix.

Themed YouTube Channel 1

  • This channel continues to be an afterthought for us. While the earnings are still there and views are significant, it’s located in Brazil and just isn’t something that we focus on given the low payout.  Further, this was the first channel that we created and frankly, my wife looks to have violated copyright as the channel is now no longer allowed for monetization.  I’m not nervous about this because every channel we built since then has been different, but this particular channel will no longer make any income.  So, it’s likely to fall off my income reports.
  • Views increased to 433k, which is a 36% decrease MoM.
  • Gained 1.7k subscribers this month.
  • PLAN: Now that the channel has lost monetization abilities, is essentially useless to us.  I didn’t realize this, but my wife sourced many of the videos directly from Instagram and then posted on YouTube.  DO NOT DO THIS, it’s blatant copyright infringement and frankly, I didn’t even realize this is how she did it in the first place.  But it’s okay, we definitely made our money back on this one and it’s a lesson learned which we obviously won’t do again.  I’m a little surprised that YouTube called us out on it considering how big the platform is, but I won’t say that we didn’t deserve it.  Like I said, lesson learned and I’m glad that our other channels are not being built this way.

Themed YouTube Channel 2 *NEW*

  • Yes folks, we’ve decided to start a new YouTube channel based on the success of our others in an effort to diversify and further grow the business. I’m really excited about this outsourced YouTube channel because it has very high production value and I think the sky is the limit in terms of how many videos can be made. Off the top, I’d be willing to bet we could make over 5000 videos easy.  While I can’t disclose the niche of this new channel, it’s focused mainly on celebrities and has a nice SEO component and potentially viral component to it as well.

In my opinion, this is the holy grail of YouTube channels.  If you can somehow mix SEO with viral potential, that’s really where you can create a big YouTube channel.  The problem with this channel is that each video produced costs around $90 total.  This includes research, script, voiceover, editing, and posting.  My wife has been utilizing the funds from the Website 8 Complimentary YouTube Channel to bankroll the video production here and reinvesting everything she’s been making.

While the channel is very new, we’re already seeing some pretty incredible growth and my hope is that this channel blows up and gives her enough income where she can pay for all production and take a draw of earnings. If you’re interested in building an outsourced YouTube channel like this, I recommend that you check out this webinar.
  • Views hit 497 for the month. For those that don’t know, this is VERY good for a new YouTube channel.
  • Gained 6 subscribers this month.
  • Channel earned $0 this month. (It’s not yet eligible for monetization)
  • How Much Have We Invested in This YouTube Channel: $1280 (Estimate of $1080/month in expenses)
  • How Much Money Has This YouTube Channel Made? $0
  • Total ROI: -$1,280
  • PLAN: As of now, my wife is having her production team create three videos per week.  I have very high hopes for this channel and think that the idea is pretty brilliant.  Time will tell, but the early signs are incredibly encouraging and I think within six months this channel will be doing very well for itself.

Thalita Vlog Channel

  • Thalita’s vlog channel did alright this month and frankly, she had issues continually publishing because she was so tired from her pregnancy. She does seem to be reenergized again and we’ll see how much energy she has in the future to continue production here.  Her thought is that her pregnancy is going to increase viewership significantly and she needs to hit the road running as this is happening, I’m not 100% sure but we’ll see what happens with this channel.
  • Views hit 28k this month, which is a decrease of 66% MoM.
  • Gained 321 subscribers this month.
  • Earnings decreased to $52, which is a decrease of 59% MoM.
  • How Much Did We Invest in This YouTube Channel: $750 (Estimate of $300/month in expenses)
  • How Much Money Has This YouTube Channel Made? $207
  • Total ROI: -$543
  • PLAN: As of now Thalita will continue to publish two videos per week.  Her engagement has increased since she announced her pregnancy, so I’m excited to see how much of an impact that makes on her engagement overall.

Lessons Learned

Every month, I’m going to reflect back and tell you a few different lessons that I’ve learned. My hope is that the lessons each month will be a cautionary tale for you that makes it so that you don’t make the dumb mistakes that I do along the way.

  • Everyone makes mistakes even after YEARS of experience (Website 10 and me being too dumb to realize Google Analytics wasn’t setup properly)
  • There is such a thing as too much guest posting (With the OHP website I think I did too much guest posting on the same outlets. Now I’m doing a maximum of two posts on each domain.)
  • Fight through the bad months. (In general, this wasn’t a very good month and I’ve been overworked and stressed even though my earnings have not increased in tandem with the number of hours I’ve been working.  I’m not panicking but understand that sometimes bad months happen and hopefully October will be much better.)
